Types of Tents

There are several different kinds of tents, and here we will discuss many of the traditional tent types.

  • First of all, there is the Bell tent. This tent is usually supported in the very center by a pole, and sleeps a number of people.
  • Next, there is the Chum. This is similar to a Native American teepee, but is usually a lot larger in diameter.
  • A fly tent is a tent that is simply a piece of cloth or material strung over a central pole with cord. This type of tent has no walls.

  • A Lavvu is a tent that came from the Sami people in the Northern parts of Scandinavia. It is like a Tipi, but is less vertical and sturdier against high winds.
  • A loue is an ultra light-weight, open tent that is just used as protection from the wind and rain.
  • A Nomadic tent is a tent used by nomads in Central Asia. These tents are usually made from spun Yak Wool.

  • A tarp tent is a tent that is made out of tarp or plastic sheeting, often with a tent pole or ropes supporting the tarp.
  • A teepee is a cone shaped tent that was popularized by Native Americans of the great plains. It was usually constructed from animal skin or birch bark.
  • A wigwam is a dwelling that is dome shaped. It was used by many Native American tribes. It is not to be confused with a teepee, which is very different in design and construction.
